Wind Turbines

Wind Turbine

Explore more energy saving opportunities with our high quality Wind Turbines. Our turbines are quiet, cost effective and maintenance free. They are generally installed within 1 day and the electricity produced can be used for your home, farm or factory.

The turbines are supplied with the inverter necessary for a grid connection and are fully compliant with Irish grid rules. Once the wind speed reaches over 3m/s (11kmh), the unit will provide power.

Savings

The larger the turbine the more power it will produce. It is vital to match the turbine to the usage of the premises to get the best economic return. The table below shows the expected economic returns from a wind turbine on a yearly basis.

Model Units Output/Yr Cost/Unit Saving/Yr* CO2 Saving Typically Suitable For
1kW 2500 20 cent €500 2.5 tonnes House
3kW 7500 20 cent €1,500 7.5 tonnes Farm/SME
5kW 12500 20 cent €2,500 12.5 tonnes Farm/SME/Factory

*your electricity bill will be reduced by this figure yearly

Assumptions: 30% efficiency from the turbine annually
Cost/unit generated: 20c/unit
Premises Usage: 95%

To get an exact return from each turbine the following factors should be applied:

  • The exact cost/kwh you purchase power at from your utility
  • Any night/day rate prices
  • Efficiency from the turbine - windy sites will work up to 35% efficiency
  • Energy cost inflation of 5%/yr
Should your turbine generate more electricity than your house requires – excess electricity can be sold back to the ESB for 9-19 cents per kWh. The ESB is offering a free meter-exchange for all wind turbine customers.

Environmental

Because the turbines produce no pollution, and use wind power, you will be offsetting carbon emissions that would have been generated by your utility company. The unit also does not have batteries. The table above show the amount of CO2 that you will prevent from being released on an annual basis.

Is my site suitable?

The location is key to the success of a wind turbine installation. The site should be free from shelter offered by trees, hedges or houses as they block the flow of wind. Please note the following criteria for a suitable installation:

  • Do you have a land area of at least ¾ acre?
(larger turbines need more space, 3 acres minimum for 3kw, 5kw & 10kw)
  • Do you have a relatively open view from the south east around to the north west
  • Is your premises to the east or north of the intended site location.
  • Is your site located at least 30 metres from your neighbours dwelling house?
  • Is there an electrical source 220volts (3 phase for 10kw) within 30 metres of your intended site.
  • Is there a dry area at this location to house an inverter
  • If you generally think you have a windy location, you probably have. Go to the contact section for a quote!

Installation

The towers come in different heights - starting at 6m for 1kw up to 12 metres for the 5 and 10kw turbines. The towers need to be anchored at 4 points around the base. The ground needs to be suitable to be able to sink an anchor 3ft deep. A concrete base is generally not required for the 1kw and 2kw turbines but is a requirement for the larger turbines.

The 400W and 1kW turbines are available as a DIY kit – all other turbines require the installation of a trained technician. The installation of a 1kW turbine is usually carried out within half a day – the 10kW unit takes up to 3 days.
